  • Ellis Lister establishes the first Manningham Mill (Lilycroft Mill), marking the beginning of Lister Mills’ legacy in Bradford.

  • Samuel Cunliffe Lister (1815 - 1906).

    Lilycroft Mill is destroyed by fire, leading Samuel Cunliffe Lister to commission architects Andrews & Pepper to design the iconic Lister Mills as we know it today.

  • Lister Mills.

    Lister Mills opens as the largest silk factory in the world at the time, built with a 225-foot-tall chimney in the style of an Italian campanile.

  • Listers & Co LTD Coal Trucks.

    Lister’s Mill becomes a major contributor to the local economy, employing around 5,000 men, women, and children from Bradford and the surrounding areas.

  • Leesona Machines, 1937.

    The mill transitions from steam power to electricity, reflecting the advancements in industrial technology of the era.

    1934
  • Operating ring spinning machine, 1948.

    Lister Mills plays a vital role in supporting the war effort by producing materials such as parachute silk and flame-proof wool.

    1940s
  • Stored Fabrics.

    Bradford’s textile industry faces challenges from overseas competition and shifting consumer preferences, leading to a decline in production and job losses at Lister’s Mill and other mills in the region.

    1960s - 1970s
  • Women working on velvet curtains, 1989.

    After decades of operation, Lister Mills closes its doors, marking the end of its long history as a textile manufacturing facility.
    1990s
  • Southern Mill, 2020.

    The mill is transformed into a vibrant mixed-use destination.

    The Northern Mill becomes residential apartments by Urban Splash, while the Southern Mill provides commercial units for modern businesses.

    The iconic ‘Listers Pride’ chimney remains a landmark, preserving the mill’s heritage.
